Sunshine Structures works on historic school restoration, N-power facility

Sunshine Structures Inc. has completed the structural concrete for general contractor Ajax Building Corp. on the three-story, 30,000-square-foot Charlotte High School Historical Renovation in Punta Gorda, Fla. This is the original 1926 Charlotte High School that was damaged by Hurricane Charlie in 2004.

This historic building was restored to its original state and brought up to compliance with current Hurricane Code Standards. Sunshine Structures work included cast-in-place concrete foundations, elevated decks, masonry brick replacement and tuck pointing. Eric Miller served as the project manager for Sunshine Structures, and Brad Harger was project superintendent.

Sunshine Structures has reached mid-point on the 105,000-square-foot Nuclear Power Plant maintenance facility in Jensen Beach, Fla. The work should be finished in October. Sunshine Structures was awarded the contract to complete all cast-in-place structural including hollow-core topping and masonry.

Due to the extreme security necessities of this project being part of an existing nuclear power plant, all of employees had to pass the stringent FBI Security Clearance requirements including a three-year background investigation, psychological testing, drug/alcohol tests, and fingerprinting for FBI Criminal History before being permitted to work on the project. The Weitz Co. is the general contractor and Austin Company Architects designed the building. Rick Johnston is the project executive for Sunshine Structures, and Jose Gonzalez is project superintendent.

Finally, the structural concrete and masonry on the 103,000-square-foot MIMA Medical Office Building in Melbourne, Fla., has been completed.

Marshall Erdman & Associates awarded Sunshine Structures the contract to complete the structural package on this two-story tilt-wall building, which included all cast-in-place concrete, steel-reinforced tilt-walls and masonry. MEA1 Inc. designed the building. Russ McCone was the project manager for Sunshine and David Arjoon was project superintendent.
