The Insulating Concrete Form Association (ICFA) has awarded the second annual ICFA Excellence Awards, recognizing the best commercial and residential insulating concrete form (ICF) projects completed in 2006.
Commercial Winners
The ICFA Grand Commercial Award and ICFA Large Commercial Award went to the Megaplex 20 at the District in South Jordan, Utah.
The 210,000 square feet was built with Reward Wall Systems installed by IMS Masonry and designed by architect FFKR.
This is one of the largest ICF projects ever built, with a wall area of 190,000 square feet (35,000 blocks) in heights of 36 feet and 50 feet above grade. The theatre complex has a main floor area of 144,500 square feet, equivalent to 2.5 NFL-approved-size football fields.
The ICFA Small Commercial Award Winner was the Mills Quarter Properties in Bend, Ore. The structure has 25 units of three- and four-story homes, many with elevators and rooftop decks.
Arxx ICFs were manufactured by Arxx Building Products and the building was engineered by Ang Engineering. It was designed by architects GGL and 4240
This project earned the local 2006 Tour of Homes, "Green Building Award."
Sustainability Winner
The ICFA Sustainability Award Winner was E2 City Homes, a multi-family homes project in Minneapolis, Minn.
Reward Wall Systems were installed by Cemstone Contractor Supply and the building was designed by The Urban Project.
The building, which has Energy Star rated windows and doors, boasts geothermal heat pump and features insulated concrete poured walls with foam soybean based insulation. Energy Star rated windows and doors.
International Winner
The ICFA International Award went to Ikarashi Kensetsu Kogyo - Japan, located in Niigata, Japan.
IntegraSpec ICFs were installed by general contractor Ikarashi Kensetsu of Kogyo. Natabe Takumi was the engineer and Takahashi Osamu was the architect/designer.
Residential Winners
The ICFA Grand Residential Award Winner and the ICFA Large Residential Award Winner was the Bob and Kaye Eberhard residence.in Redmond, Ore.
PeterBuilt Homes LLC installed the Logix ICF system. Glacier Inc. engineered the home, which had a challenging terrain, and was designed by Peter B. Coughlin.
The home features Logix 6-inch ICF Block with 35 percent fly-ash concrete mix and it has a solar assisted/radiant floor heating system. It is Energy Star rated with a stucco finish over ICF with Rouge River stone accent.
The design was done with a program called Chief Architect 10.8.that allows a 3-D walk-through and renderings that allowed the designer to tweak the design to fit the lot and accommodate the owner's square foot needs.
The ICFA Small Residential Award Winner was the home of Anthony and Cynthia Marchesiello in La Grange, Calif.
Arxx Building Products provided the ICFs for all walls on all exterior and interior garage walls in the home engineered by Fred Diba Engineering and designed by Toledo Design & Development
Access to the home begins with a 550-foot trip up a winding driveway. Insulation in the attic has an R value of at least R38. The house has Alamo inspired mission-styled stucco with a traditional Eagle Brand tile roof. CM
